Tanzania Expedition
8 days / 7 nights

Tanzania is one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The wildlife viewing is out of this world and big cats are especially easy to see. All members of the Big Five can be found in various Tanzanian parks and reserves, and all five are present in the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Almost 40% of the country is protected and set aside for conservation, which means that it’s easy to go on a Tanzania safari for full weeks and drive from park to park while rarely leaving the bush.

In this tour we propose you the Northern Safari Circuit – the most popular Tanzania safari route comprising the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park and Arusha National Park.

In addition, we offer you the opportunity to unwind with a 4-day stay at Marumbi Beach in Zanzibar, the perfect way to relax after your safari adventure.

Where are we going ?

Arusha: A Gateway to Safari:

The undisputed safari capital of Tanzania, the city of Arusha is on the itinerary of virtually anyone visiting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara, as logistics often dictate an overnight layover in or around the city. Set in the shadow of Mount Meru, Arusha has its own international airport (Kilimanjaro International Airport) as well as the smaller Arusha Airport for charter flights to final destinations. If you spend some time in Arusha, you’ll have many opportunities to buy souvenirs, take in the cultural activities and visit local places of interest.

Arusha National Park:

Covers Mount Meru, a prominent volcano with an elevation of 4566 m, in the Arusha Region of north eastern Tanzania. The park is small but varied with spectacular landscapes in three distinct areas. In the west, the Meru Crater funnels the Jekukumia River; the peak of Mount Meru lies on its rim. Ngurdoto Crater in the south-east is grassland. The shallow alkaline Momella Lakes in the north-east have varying algal colours and are known for their wading birds.

Mount Meru is the second highest peak in Tanzania after Mount Kilimanjaro, which is just 60 km away and forms a backdrop to views from the park to the east. Arusha National Park lies on a 300-kilometre axis of Africa's most famous national parks, running from Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in the west to Kilimanjaro National Park in the east.

The park is just a few kilometres north east of Arusha, though the main gate is 25 km east of the city. It is also 58 km from Moshi and 35 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA).

Tarangire National Park: An Elephant Empire:

Close to Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire is worth much more than the usual day visit. During the June to October dry season, animal – especially elephant – concentrations along the Tarangire River are among the highest in the country. The park’s bird count of more than 500 species means that a visit here is one of the most rewarding Tanzania safaris for twitchers, while its full range of large predators complete the appeal. Tarangire is a beautifully diverse wilderness featuring riverine forest, huge swamps and open woodlands that include Africa’s iconic baobab trees.

Serengeti National Park: A Safari Superstar:

Synonymous with safari, the Serengeti is where to go in Tanzania for game viewing at its most dramatic. Hosting the lion’s share of the Wildebeest Migration (from about January to September), the Serengeti's sheer size, accessibility, top-quality lodges and camps, and year-round abundance of wildlife make it one of the best safari destinations in Africa. It's also a regular stop on the best Tanzania safari tours.

Ngorongoro Crater: Haven for the Big 5:

Take about 30 000 animals and place them inside the crater of an extinct volcano. Add wetlands, forest, grasslands and some out-of-this-world cliff-top accommodation, and the result is the Ngorongoro Crater. This superb Tanzania safari destination offers excellent game viewing in an unbelievably unique setting. It’s renowned for delivering the easiest and most reliable Big 5 sightings in East Africa, and is provides what is arguably the best safari in Tanzania.

Lake Manyara National Park: Home to Tree-climbing Lions:

Part of Tanzania's famed Northern Safari Circuit, Lake Manyara offers easy game viewing in a beautiful setting. The park is home to a good range of heavyweight species, including buffalo, hippo, giraffe, elephant, leopard, and its famous tree-climbing lions. Lake Manyara is an exceptional bird-watching destination. You’ll often see flocks of pelicans and flamingos in the middle of the lake, and the floodplains, woodlands and evergreen forests are equally vibrant.

Travel Requirements for Tanzania

Preparing properly for your journey to Tanzania is an important part of ensuring a safe and smooth expedition. Below you will find essential information regarding visas, vaccinations, malaria precautions and travelling with children. We strongly recommend checking all requirements well in advance of your departure.

Visa Requirements:

Most travellers visiting Tanzania require a tourist visa. The easiest way to obtain it is through the official online e-Visa system before travelling.

Tourist visas are generally issued for stays of up to 90 days. In some cases, visas may also be obtained on arrival at major international airports, however applying online in advance is strongly recommended to avoid delays.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates and should contain at least one blank page for entry stamps.

Requirements may change depending on nationality, therefore guests should always confirm the latest regulations with the relevant authorities.

Vaccinations:

There are currently no mandatory vaccinations for travellers arriving directly from Europe or North America.

However, a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required if you are travelling from, or have recently transited through, a country where Yellow Fever is present. This requirement is strictly enforced if you arrive from certain African or South American countries.

Regardless of official requirements, most travel health specialists recommend ensuring that routine vaccinations are up to date. These commonly include:

  • Tetanus

  • Hepatitis A

  • Hepatitis B

  • Typhoid

As medical advice varies depending on personal health and travel history, we strongly recommend consulting a travel clinic or your doctor several weeks before departure.

Malaria:

Malaria is present in many parts of Tanzania, including several national parks and wildlife areas.

For this reason, travellers are generally advised to take anti-malarial medication during their stay. Your doctor or travel clinic can recommend the most appropriate medication for your itinerary.

Additional precautions are also important:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or similar ingredients

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers in the evening

  • Sleep under mosquito nets where provided

  • Avoid exposure to mosquitoes during dusk and dawn

Lodges and camps on our expeditions take mosquito control seriously and provide appropriate protection, but personal precautions remain essential.

Travelling with Children:

Families travelling with children should be aware of Tanzania’s strict regulations regarding minors entering or leaving the country.

Children under the age of 18 may be required to present:

  • A birth certificate showing the names of both parents

  • A parental consent letter if travelling with only one parent or with a guardian

  • Copies of parents’ passports and contact details

These regulations are designed to prevent child trafficking and may be requested by immigration officials upon arrival or departure.

We strongly recommend carrying all relevant documentation to avoid any delays at immigration.

Final Recommendation:

Travel regulations, health requirements and visa policies may change at any time. For this reason, guests are responsible for verifying the most up-to-date information with official government sources and medical professionals before travelling.

If you have any questions while preparing for your expedition, the MaiaWildlife team will always be happy to assist and guide you through the process.

Money and Tipping in Tanzania

Understanding how money and tipping work in Tanzania will help make your journey smoother and more enjoyable. While travelling on safari most expenses are already covered, but it is still useful to carry some local currency and small denominations for personal purchases and gratuities.

Currency:

The official currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). However, US Dollars are widely accepted in many lodges, safari camps and tourism-related services.

When bringing US Dollars, please ensure that the notes are:

  • Printed in 2009 or newer

  • In good condition with no tears or damage

Older banknotes are often not accepted in Tanzania.

Small purchases in villages, markets or local shops are usually made in Tanzanian Shillings, so it can be useful to exchange a small amount of money upon arrival.

Credit Cards and Payments:

Most high-end lodges, safari camps and hotels accept major credit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard.

However, card payments may sometimes include a small transaction fee, and connectivity in remote areas can occasionally be unreliable.

For this reason, it is always advisable to carry some cash for small personal expenses.

ATMs are available in major cities such as Arusha, Dar es Salaam, and Kilimanjaro Airport, but they are generally not available in remote safari areas.

Tipping Guidelines:

Tipping is a common and appreciated practice within the Tanzanian tourism industry. It is an important part of the income for many guides, trackers and camp staff who work hard to ensure an exceptional safari experience.

Tipping is always voluntary and should reflect your satisfaction with the service received.

As a general guideline:

Safari Guide / Driver Guide

  • Around 10–20 USD per guest per day

Safari Camp or Lodge Staff (shared tip box)

  • Around 5–10 USD per guest per day

Many lodges provide a general staff tip box where contributions are shared among the entire team, including housekeeping, kitchen staff and other behind-the-scenes personnel.

Our Recommendation:

We recommend bringing a combination of small US Dollar notes and, if possible, exchanging a small amount into Tanzanian Shillings for minor purchases.

Your safari guide and the MaiaWildlife team will always be happy to assist if you have any questions regarding payments or tipping during your expedition.

Proper tipping is a meaningful way to recognise the dedication and hard work of the people who make your safari experience truly unforgettable.

Electricity, Voltage and Wall Plugs in Tanzania

Electricity in Tanzania is generally reliable in cities, hotels and safari lodges, although power supply in remote areas can occasionally be limited or provided by generators or solar systems.

Understanding the local voltage and plug types will help you prepare the necessary adapters for charging your electronic devices during your expedition.

Voltage and Frequency:

Tanzania operates on a 230 Volt supply with a frequency of 50 Hz, which is the same standard used in most European countries.

Most modern electronic devices such as:

  • Cameras

  • Smartphones

  • Laptops

  • Battery chargers

are designed to work with 100–240V, meaning they can be used safely without a voltage converter. However, always check your device specifications before travelling.

Plug Types:

The most common wall plugs used in Tanzania are Type D and Type G.

Our Recommendation:

We recommend bringing a universal travel adapter so you can easily charge your devices regardless of the socket type available.

If you plan to bring several devices such as cameras, phones, laptops or battery chargers, a multi-USB adapter or small power strip can also be very useful during your stay.

Your safari vehicle will usually provide charging ports for cameras and phones during drives, allowing you to keep your equipment ready for the next wildlife sighting.

In Tanzania the power plugs and sockets are of type D and G.
In Tanzania the power plugs and sockets are of type D and G.

Travel Insurance

For all expeditions to Tanzania, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Travelling in remote wilderness areas is an incredible experience, but it also means that access to medical facilities can be limited and unexpected situations may occur.

A good travel insurance policy helps ensure that you are properly protected throughout your journey.

What Your Insurance Should Cover:

We recommend that your travel insurance includes the following coverage:

  • Medical expenses

Coverage for medical treatment, hospitalisation and emergency care during your trip.

  • Emergency medical evacuation

Many safari areas are remote, and in case of a serious medical situation evacuation by air ambulance to a major hospital may be necessary. This type of evacuation can be extremely expensive without proper insurance.

  • Trip cancellation or interruption

Protection in case you need to cancel or shorten your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family emergencies or travel disruptions.

  • Lost or delayed baggage

Coverage for luggage or personal belongings that may be delayed, damaged or lost during international travel.

  • Personal equipment

If you are travelling with valuable equipment such as cameras, lenses or binoculars, you may wish to ensure these items are covered by your policy.

Adventure and Safari Activities:

Although our expeditions are carefully organised and guided by experienced professionals, safari activities still take place in natural environments. For this reason, it is important that your insurance policy does not exclude safari travel or wildlife activities.

Proof of Insurance:

We recommend carrying a digital and printed copy of your insurance policy, including emergency contact numbers, during your trip.

Our Recommendation:

Guests are responsible for arranging their own travel insurance before departure. We strongly advise purchasing a policy at the time of booking your expedition, as many insurance providers include cancellation coverage from the moment the policy is issued.

If you have any questions while preparing for your journey, the MaiaWildlife team will be happy to assist you with guidance before your expedition begins.

Dress  Code for a Expedition in Tanzania

Dressing appropriately for a safari is an important part of the experience. The right clothing will keep you comfortable, protect you from the sun and insects, and allow you to blend naturally into the surrounding environment.

At MaiaWildlife we always encourage our guests to follow a practical and respectful safari dress code that reflects the traditions of African wildlife travel.

Natural Colours:

Neutral and earthy tones are the best choice for a safari. Colours such as:

  • Khaki

  • Olive green

  • Beige

  • Brown

  • Light grey

blend naturally with the landscape and help minimise disturbance to wildlife.

Bright colours, very dark colours and white clothing are generally not recommended. White gets dusty very quickly, while black and dark blue tend to attract insects such as tsetse flies.

Lightweight and Breathable Clothing:

Tanzania can be warm during the day, especially on safari drives. Lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton or technical outdoor materials are ideal.

Typical safari clothing includes:

  • Short or long sleeve safari shirts

  • Lightweight trousers, safari pants or shorts

  • Comfortable shorts for warmer hours

  • A light jacket or fleece for cool mornings

Early morning game drives can be surprisingly cool, particularly in open safari vehicles, so dressing in layers is always a good idea.

Sun Protection:

The African sun can be very strong, even when temperatures feel moderate. Protecting yourself from sun exposure is essential.

We recommend bringing:

  • A wide-brim safari hat or cap

  • Sunglasses with UV protection

  • High-quality sunscreen

  • A lightweight scarf or buff for dust and sun protection

Footwear:

Comfortable footwear is important, especially during travel days and around lodges.

Recommended options include:

  • Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots

  • Breathable outdoor sneakers

  • Sandals for relaxing at camp or lodge

Most safaris involve limited walking, but sturdy shoes are always advisable when exploring around camps or lodges.

Evenings at the Lodge:

Evenings on safari are usually relaxed and informal. Comfortable casual clothing is perfectly appropriate.

Because temperatures may drop after sunset, it is advisable to bring:

  • A light jacket or fleece

  • Long trousers

  • A long-sleeve shirt for mosquito protection

Respecting the Safari Tradition:

Safari style has a long tradition in East Africa, combining practicality with simplicity. Dressing in neutral colours and functional clothing not only enhances your comfort but also contributes to a more authentic safari atmosphere.

At MaiaWildlife we believe that the right preparation helps our guests fully enjoy the beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes and wildlife while travelling responsibly and respectfully in these extraordinary natural environments.

Lodges and Camps

Outpost Lodge:

The main house belonged to the renowned conservationist Bernhard Grzimek, one of the key founders of the Serengeti national park and Director of the Frankfurt Zoological Society (1945 to 1974).

Steve and Cathy Attwell bought the main house from the Grzimek family and have retained strong links with the Frankfurt Zoological Society. The Outpost has been the home away from home for many researchers and conservationists from the Society and other projects over the years.

We opened our doors in 1994 and were the first Bed and Breakfast in Arusha. Throughout the years we built up the lodge slowly to be a peaceful and lush oasis with the capacity to host groups and individuals.

We are a family run hotel and the next generation are now assisting with running the day to day operations at the lodge.
